Best And Worst States For Women’s Equality

Women’s rights have come a long way, but we still have to deal with unequal treatment in society. And thanks to a new ranking from personal finance site WalletHub, we now know which states are better for gender equality and which aren’t.

You’d think the gender gap in America would be closing by now, but according to the World Economic Forum’s 2016 Gender Gap Index, it’s expanding. Out of the 144 countries they ranked based on gender equality, the U.S. dropped from 28 last year to 45 this year.

And when WalletHub compared differences between genders in workplace environment, education and health, and political empowerment in each state, they found Hawaii is the best for women’s equality and on the flip side, Utah ranks worst. New York comes in at number 11, and California is 14.

States with the smallest income gap are Hawaii, Florida, Delaware, New York and North Carolina. The ones with the largest gaps are Wyoming, North Dakota, Utah, Alabama and a tie between Louisiana and Alaska, and of course, the disadvantaged gender is women.

States with the smallest gaps in executive positions are Wyoming, Alaska, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Virginia, while Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Utah have the highest. So we may have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go!

Where did Rhode Island rank?  34th out of 50.
