Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has announced a tentative agreement with the police union. The five-year deal needs ratification votes from both the union and the city council.
“Community safety has been a top priority of my administration and in order to keep our neighborhoods safe, we need to support the officers on our streets,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “This agreement includes competitive compensation for our Providence police officers, while making significant investments in the Providence pension system that has too long gone underfunded.”
The agreement calls for a 4.25 percent yearly increase for all five years of the deal. It increases the officer’s contribution to the pension fund and establishes a new promotional process which includes best practices from other departments.
Ratification votes are being scheduled.
